By Mark Scales

Mark reveals some things we knew about the special effects and editing, and some things we didn't...

Scene 1

The Corridor behind the door is a composite photo of several of the corridors from Scene 9 with the doors taken out. You can see the reflection of the doors in the floor!

When Obi-Wan deflects the guards laser blast, it flies down the corridor and hits the final wall with a puff of smoke

On one close-up shot of Obi-Wan with his hood up, there was a light visible in the top right hand corner. This was removed by computer

One of the guards could not bring their gun down in time, and so we had to split the screen down the middle and shift one side back half a second! (I won't embarass the guard by saying what her name was)

The shot where the bounty hunters turn around to face the emperor after he says "Wait" is played backwards

One shot of the bounty hunters walking away from the emperor is repeated, because the bluescreen was too hard

Scene 2

The windows have a 3D frame on them, put on with computer

The skipping Jedi is on a repeating loop

The shot of Luke and Leia is a split-screen. Both parts are played by the same person

Most of Obi-Wan's lines are dubbed

Amidala's voice is electronically lowered

Scene 3

Nagasaki's head is on a repeating loop

Amidala's face is superimposed on another person

The lift is a turbolift from Star Trek: The Next Generation

The shot of the bow is zoomed in, to avoid showing Amidala's double

The shots of the sky only last about 5 seconds, so every time we return to a certain camera angle, the clouds are back where they started

Scene 4

Some of the shots of Maul kneeling are reversed

Scene 5

Some of the shots are played backwards

The establishing shot is the end of the establishing shot for scene 3

Scene 6

The replicator was possibly the easiest effect to do, although it's one of the most effective (no pun intended)

The strings of all the flying objects were digitally removed on computer

A microphone was visible in several of the shots. This was also removed

The shakey camera effect was done on computer after filming

Anakin's head-smash was split-screened to make it perfectly in time with Obi-Wan smashing his cup down

Scene 7

The guard's voice was lowered during editing (No, it really was)

As the guard walks to the emperor, the back of his neck is superimposed, because you could see the stars through it!

Scene 8

Shakey camera on computer again

The greenscreen was several feet behind the window frame, enabling the screen to be lit independently making the effect much easier in post production

The smoke after the explosion was caused by a smoke machine

Scene 8a

The console flashes were done on computer in post-production, as was the sign "No Life Forms Detected"

The Lightning was taking directly from Return Of The Jedi. We actually only used 1 small lightning clip lasting 1.5 seconds. We just repeated it and stretched it and reversed it and....you get the picture

The explosion of the ship is taken straight from Star Wars - A New Hope (It's a TIE-Fighter blowing up)

Scene 9

ON THE WAY...
