WEBDOC 01 - Get your TENCLO fix while you wait for the premiere!
Since you all have a little while to wait before the official release of the film (currently planned for September - hang in there! - it will be worth the wait!), and while we are all still busy beavering away in post-production, we have prepared a few treats for you - Darren has been putting together a few short web documentaries charting the course of the TENCLO production. These will be released periodically between now and the official release date, and will eventually feature as extras on the DVD (which will never be sold, but may be available as a free download). The first webdoc is now available for download:

TENCLO CALENDAR AVAILABLE FOR DOWNLOAD
In anticipation of BYP's latest production STAR WARS - The Emperor's New Clones, you can now download the TENCLO calendar right here! "With all our efforts going in to post production, we didn't have much time to prepare something like a full 2006 calendar" says Darren Scales, producer and director of TENCLO. "Fortunately, one of our post producers got the bug and created the whole thing for us!! Special thanks therefore goes to Dan Owen for producing the calendar for us at such short notice. Enjoy!

TENCLO PICK UP WEEKEND A SUCCESS!!!
As with all big movies, it is normal practice to bring the cast and crew together again to shoot extra scenes or re-shoot things that did not come out as planned during principal photography. Well TENCLO is no different and in November, the team returned to Lincoln for a weekend of filming and sound work.

" We set out for quite a relaxing couple of days", said Darren Scales, director of TENCLO. The schedule was about half the workload we set for a day of filming during principal photography back in August. But obviously we are a bit out of practice as it wasn't long before we were exhausted!"

Pick ups normally cover a variety of scenes, so the crew must make ready a whole variety of set pieces and blue screens. "We are filming shots for over 6 scenes today", said Mark Scales (Anakin Skywalker and Visual Effects supervisor). It is taking a long time just to prepare a shot!

The Pick up weekend also provided a great opportunity for the Computer visual effects team to meet up and exchange notes. "There is a massive amount of computer effects in this film." said Darren. "When I first wrote the story, I did not expect to get the whole thing filmed. Normally in amateur film, you have to make compromises right form the outset, but with TENCLO, every set was built, every costume made. Now we have the daunting task of actually turning that hard work into reality! With less than 3 months to the premiere, it is going to be a close thing, if we are to produce a film worthy of all the team's hard work!"

Principal Photography

Well, principal photography (or the main bit of filming!) is now at an end! 16 continuous days of being on set at 7am and leaving the set at midnight are finally over! And what a busy fortnight (and a bit) it was.

Click here for the run-down and a few pictures

TENCLO Cast Begin the Duels!
Calling in help from a member of the UK Kendo under 18 team, the TENCLO team have been practising their lightsaber routine in preparation for filming in August.

Fighting for over 6 hours with Jake, the team managed to work on several routines and introduce some new concepts to traditional lightsaber duels previously seen in fanfilms.

“We are hoping to have more than ‘simple’ lightsaber fights. In Star Wars, the Jedi fight for a reason, not just to have good special effects,” explained Darren Scales, BYP’s Executive bully and producer of TENCLO. “We are hoping to have a variety of routines making maximum use of the enormous main set we have built. But there are a few surprises in store also!”

FIRST SET NEARS COMPLETION
With just 4 weeks to go before principal photography, the first and largest set has been built.  The next step is to dress the set with authentic looking pieces such as control panels.  The set will then undergo lighting trials before the final stage of laying the floor!

“This set has been designed to feature in several major scenes in the film,” said Darren Scales, producer of The Emperor’s New Clones.  “Being our last venture into the Star Wars world, we wanted to create a really special set that was, in many ways, true to the images already seen in Star Wars, but with a few BYP twists…”

Work still continues with the other 6 sets…

First TENCLO Bluescreen Tests
Eager to not repeat the mistakes we made with bluescreens during TESBY, the BYP Computer FX team led by Mark Scales spent the day at the TENCLO soundstage for some good old blue-screen testing.

Results were mixed but already an improvement on the last film. "We are currently still using the same blue-screen package as before, but with improved lighting" Mark explained "We are then looking to improve the effect with a new software package. Whatever happens, the blue-screen effects are already better than TESBY" Phew, they couldn't get much worse!!

The team will be continuing more blue screen work over the next few weeks.

BYP enjoys first Tech Test!

With new dolly and Jib in tow, BYP set about its first tech test day - On Luke's birthday!!

With some members more keen than others (no pressure Sandra!), the Jib was built and used. "It was like Doom Raiders all over again" said Darren Scales, producer for TENCLO. "I remember Dom Gilvary showing the Cyprus jib for the first time! This piece of kit will take our set-based filming ability to a new level. We learned a lot about using the jib out there and we hope to bring those lessons to TENCLO.

The Dolly was also tested and produced mixed results. "We haven't used a track at this stage, because the floor is already level." Tells Phill Hambrook, Lead Set Builder and technical guru. "But the carpeted areas are making the dolly difficult to pull, we shall see" At least the dolly pullers will enjoy a good work out!

Set Design Begins for TENCLO!
After collecting dimensions of the soundstage, Ed has been beavering away planning the arrangements and sizes of the sets required for our next production, THE EMPEROR'S NEW CLONES. Current plans are to build 6 sets, ranging from cockpits to kitchens! "We are really going for it this time" says Darren Scales, producer of TENCLO. "Whilst we have made other films and smaller productions since our last Star Wars film made in 1999, with the release of the last Star Wars film, this will be our last one also, so the environment in which we film must be spectacular." Of course that is easy for Darren to say, he hasn't got to design them all. That enormous responsibility rests with Ed Hollingsbee, Creative Consultant for TENCLO. " Everyone is already aware of the Star Wars Universe, but with our very limited budget we have the challenge of having to create the same environment out of cardboard and wood."

Designing began on paper and then onto computer where more detailed drawings were prepared. "The computer allows us to quickly make maximum of use of the soundstage area. Cramming in up to 6 sets in one location is not an easy task". Of course designing the sets is one thing, building them is something else! BYP has planned its first big set building weekend on 28-30 May 2005; anyone interested in coming along should email Daz for details

More details on set work to follow.

Daz and Eds on Sunday Times' The Month DVD
A short interview with Daz and Eds was featured on the Sunday Times' 'The Month' DVD a couple of weeks ago. An entertainment review DVD, this issue featured an item about the new Star Wars film and the Star Wars phenomenon as a whole. We've got a little clip of it here... Oh, and sorry Daz for not letting you get a word in edgeways!

The Dead Donkey!
In the newspaper industry, journalists will chase stories that can be used as fillers for when there is a lack of real news. These fillers are referred to as Dead Donkeys and it is where BYP seems to fit in quite nicely! On many occasions BYP has been interviewed over the phone and even in TV studios ready to be aired to the public, only at the last minute to be dropped in favour of a more exciting story. This is nothing personal and we understand that there are many more interesting things going on than us!

We are therefore proud to have been ‘dropped’ by the following:

The Big Breakfast (Channel 4)
The Sun Newspaper
Movie Nights (Channel 5)

However there have been a few occasions where BYP has been lucky enough where the world has been quiet allowing us to rule the airwaves!

The Chris Moyles Show (Channel 5)
Sky News
Richard and Judy (Channel 4)

We hope to set up a permanent page in tribute to our fame, fortune and failure soon...

The Emperor is Back! ... and so is George!
It looks like trouble for the Galaxy again as Backyard Productions is about to embark on its second Star Wars film - THE EMPEROR'S NEW CLONES. Pre-production is now under way with principal photography due to take place in August 2005.

Backyard Productions is looking for crew members to get involved in all aspects of the production. Casting is due to begin in April, but set designing, construction and computer effects research is already under way.

BYP Has a new Jib
Following from the success of the jib (Boom arm) DOOM RAIDERS (link) Backyard Productions has begun work on building a new Jib for its next production STAR WARS EPISODE III - THE EMPEROR'S NEW CLONES. Built by our Technical wizard and house builder Phill (Lead set builder in DOOM RAIDERS) the Jib extends a full 4 metres high and pivots 360 degrees. The camera will be attached using a clamp-pod, a clever little device that works a little like a vice used on a work bench. A monitor will then be placed at the foot of the jIb for the operator or director to observe.

Experience from previous filmmaking suggests that a 2-person team will be used for the more complicated jib shots. "Some of the shots in DOOM RAIDERS where we needed a general shot moving to a close-up required 3 operators!"

Phill is now working on other items needed for filming in August 2005 while the Lincoln team being testing the new jib

The Stereophonic Workshop has a Face-lift!
With the return of Darren and Sandra from Cyprus, the Backyard Productions Stereophonic Workshop (BYPSW) has been rebuilt with improved design and functionality. "Now we have a fully integrated real-time and off-line sound editing facility" Darren begins to explain to an already bewildered audience. "I have divided the studio into sound and vision, with an integrated interface mixer allowing sound recordings to be utilized in either medium". Confused? We were! We asked Daz to try to explain it again in 'normal speak'. "OK, I can take the sound from a video and record it on to a CD, tape, computer or Mini Disc and back again". "I can also compile sound effects for projects. Generally the project determines the type of
editing to be used: Films generally involve off-line editing (using a computer package), where as Star Trek the Next Generation Game is a real-time live recording (mixing CDs together)".

The next step is for Daz to develop the video-editing suite. "I already have an off-line video system, but it is hopelessly out of date. Anything other than straightforward editing is a real chore with hours of rendering and computer crunching". Of course any upgrade is going to cost lots of dosh: best he sweet talk Sandra before splashing the cash!

In the meantime, the BYPSW stands ready to record the next season of Star Trek the Next Generation Game - some five years since the last season!

Backyard Productions on UK TV!!
Well... it finally happened - we got ourselves onto TV! After two previous failed efforts on other programmes, we appeared live on "Live with Chris Moyles" on Monday. They showed clips of both TESBY and Doom Raiders, and Chris, along with the crew and the studio audience (all air cabin-crew) seemed very impressed. We'd also been asked to make a short 'parody' of the Chris Moyles show intro for ourselves, and they showed that too! We had a great day - despite the short notice, all except one current BYP member was able to go along - Mark, Phill and Eds were interviewed, and Janine, Kevin, Matthew and Matthew's mate Mark were in the audience... propping up the bar! We have some screenshots here

Bad News!
Unfortunately, the Indy Experience could not cope with the number of downlaods of Doom Raiders, so it has been withdrawn from that site. We have, however, made it temporarily available from our own site... you'll have to find it yourself though! This will only be available for a short period of time, as we are bound to exceed our 5GB bandwidth within a few days...

Good News!
The nice chap who runs The Indy Experience has offered to host our film, so it is now available for download again... There is a link on the left hand side of the page under Site Features. His server is sometimes fast, and sometimes slow, but DON'T LET THAT STOP YOU. DOWNLOAD NOW!!!!!!!

film, has run into some problems and are not able to host our film at the moment. Rest assured though, we are working on an alternative, and should be able to let you know where you can download the film soon. We have also hopefully ironed out the missing few minutes at the end of the previous compressed version. We would like to thank those at FanfilmFX, especially Nick Long, for all their assistance with Doom Raiders hosting.

Doom Raiders Premiere
Well, I think we've recovered from the after show party. What a night it was!

We had 450 guests all dressed in black tie outfits. We had pre-show drinks in a marquee setup outside the cinema alongside a display of photos and vehicles we used (like the 4-tonne trucks you see in the trailers). We also had a 30 piece band playing music from the movies (ET, Star Wars etc.) as well as selected tracks from the Doom Raiders score!

We had taken out the posters outside the cinema and replaced them with Doom Raiders posters. One of the greatest sights of the night was seeing 450 people queueing outside a cinema waiting to see our film!

Once everyone had taken their seats, a six trumpet fanfare played as the guest of honour made his way to the front of the cinema to greet the cast and crew. Darren gave his speech, gave out a couple of awards, and then the film played.

The audience seemed to love it. Loads of little bits got rounds of applause and as the end credits went up, the audience didn't stop applauding til the screen faded to black. It was absolutely amazing. We then went back to the marquee for more drinks. We had people coming up to us asking us to sign their programmes, so we'll have to watch out for those on ebay. We also managed to sell some Doom Raiders T-Shirts, mugs, and baseball caps.

All in all, it was a fantastic night. All those months of work paid off in just one evening.

Article: BYP Filming Over but the Drama Continues
by Megan Hudson

For many of those involved in the filming of Backyard Productions' latest film, "Doom Raiders", it would seem that now the filming is over, there is little to do but wait for the premiere. However, for some keen individuals, this isn't the case and while the BYP members are hard at work editing the film, others, such as Aaron Sayers and Megan Hudson have been very much involved in the latest drama musical at St. Johns School in Episkopi, Cyprus... Bill Rimmer to attend Premiere
It is confirmed Bill Rimmer (Seen here with Darren Scales) will be attending the Premiere of Doom Raiders on May 18th 2002. You may remember Bill who introduced our last film the Empire Strikes Backyard. Since then, he has attracted a small following both within BYP and beyond.

Air Vice-Marshal Rimmer is the Commander of British Forced in Cyprus and by sheer coincidence Darren, Producer of Doom Raiders is also currently based there. Darren first met Bill at RAF Innsworth, the location for the filming of TESBY. Always happy to oblige, Bill was delighted to get stuck in although his parting comment to Daz "Now will you please stop following me around the Air Force" was hopefully in jest! Thanks Bill, we look forward to seeing you on May 18th!

Backyard Productions would sincerely like to thank Air Vice-Marshal Bill Rimmer for his enthusiasm and support.

Doom Raiders Premiere Set for May 18th
Yes, a date has finally been set for the much anticipated feature "Doom Raiders". Producer Darren Scales has confirmed that the first public showing will be on Saturday May 18th, at Astra Cinema, Akrotiri Cyprus.

Darren informs us:
"It looks like there will be a lot of top brass from all parts of the island. With so many Government departments helping us out including the Cypriot National Guard, the Dept of Education and Culture and Dept of Cypriot Antiquities, it is sure to be a massive event. We approaching confirmation of the
appearance of Air Vice Marshal Bill Rimmer and things are really hotting up! I just hope the film is going to be good enough."

Don't worry, I sure they will be in for a treat - after all, Backyard Productions is about making movies and having fun!

We were able to record the feature and can offer it to you as a download in our Doom Raiders media section here...

DOOM RAIDERS IS CUT!!!!
Yes the film has been finally edited!!! BUT THERE IS STILL A LONG WAY TO GO!!!! WE are now in process of adding the sound FX, score and visual FX! The film is still on track to be ready for its world premiere in April. The editing team have been ruthless in cutting the film to keep the action flowing and gags a plenty. "There is certainly a lot to see in the film" says Darren Scales, Producer and director of Doom Raiders. Mark Scales is well under way with the task of scoring the film. "There are a lot of very specific themes , concentrating on the characters mostly, but also some very spectacular action sequences"

Doom Raiders Select 2
Here's another teaser from the Doom Raiders production image archive... just to whet your appetite!

Doom Raiders mentioned on key Cypriot news website
Mark's web surfing has turned up another mention of our new film. This time on a Cypriot internet portal and news service (www.yourcyprus.com). It refers to the very first filming that took place back in August and the Fijian soldiers who enthusiastically took part. Read the article below...

"Indiana Jones spoof being filmed in Cyprus
A new movie based on the perennially favourite Indiana Jones is being shot in Cyprus. Filming for Doom Raiders produced by Backyard Productions has just begun and help was sought from fourteen Fijian soldiers currently serving with the Kings Own Royal Border Regiment in Episkopi, who swapped their khaki uniforms for hessian, leaves and plenty of face paint. The filming took place in the Phassouri Plantation near Akrotiri, and the plantation was quickly transformed into a tribal village with huts and campfire! The soldiers needless to say thoroughly enjoyed running around as savage head-hunters with spears. They will be back in action as thugs for the 'desert casino' scenes, but as several admitted ruefully as the day's filming came to an end, being an actor is not an easy job and that they would definitely stick to their lives in the British Army!"

28/10/01
Doom Raiders principal filming comes to an end
We are delighted to announce that the principal filming for Doom Raiders has come to an end. We had a great week out in Cyprus and have got some great footage for the film. We wont be giving it all away yet, but will provide you with a regular taster in the form of Doom Raiders Select. Here'e the first one for you...

Successful BYP UK costume making weekend!
The BYP members currently based in the UK are proud to annouce that a costume making weekend 'blitz' has gone extremely well. We got through approximately 60m of material and have produced around 50 items of clothing for the Doom Raiders film. Special thanks to Janine Russell who sat in front of that sewing machine for hours on end, to Phill Hambrook for driving all the way up from Kent to help out, and to everyone else who did their bit, including Kevin who kept us fed and watered for the entire weekend - Good job Industrial Tea and Biscuits!
Now all we have to do is lug everything out to Cyprus! We have our costumes and lots of props, and we are all set to fly out to our filming location!

08/10/01
We're gonna make movie magic!
T
he time has come for the BYP crew to jet off to Sunny Cyprus and begin filming our latest feature "Doom Raiders". We are all very excited and ready to get our teeth into filming! Darren has been working hard to get things ready, whilst the UK crew have been busy preparing costumes and props.
The filming is spread (thickly) over the next two weeks and will be rounded off with a well earned PARTY!!!! Wish us luck!!

02/10/01
BFBS to cover Doom Raiders filming
Darren has been in constant contact with the people from BFBS during pre-production for the film, and it seems that they are paying us a visit on set on the 20th October. We look forward to it!

BYP at Episkopi Fete
The BYP 'roadshow' was a hit at Episkopi Fete at the weekend, where we spent the day recruiting extras and technical crew. Proudly displaying our BYP logo, we attracted a lot of attention. Many people stayed to watch the whole of TESBY which was being shown on a loop. Newcomers also got to try out the camera boom and track dolly. T-Shirts are selling well and more money can now go into the project, thanks to NAAFI Financial. With only 4 weeks to go before filming, things are really hotting up!
09/09/01
Steve Tittensor to appear in Doom Raiders
BYP can confirm that Steve Tittensor will be appearing in Doom Raiders. Steve previously featured in Sad Boys 2 as well as a rather extraordinary private karaoke function in Tilmanstone. Renowned for his acting talents and great sense of humour, we are looking forward to Steve getting in front of the camera.

First Production Shoot... "it's a success"
Due to cast commitments, the first Doom Raiders production shoot took place on 18 Aug 2001, 6 weeks before the main shoot. The scene involving over 18 cast members took a full day of filming over 3 locations. Not wishing to reveal the storyline, Director Darren Scales said "Everything has gone to plan. Despite a few technical problems, we still managed to finish ahead of schedule." BYP has not had such a large cast representation since 1995 during the filming of Batman Returns Forever. "I wasn't at the filming of the massacre scene in BRF, Mark helped me out on that one! But I can see what he had to go through with directing so many people!" Remember...The main film shoot is set to take place 13 - 28 October 2001

We have a camera boom!
Thanks to the skill and efforts of Dom Gilvary our resident "techxpert" in Cyprus, we now have a boom arm capable of raising the camera to over six metres high!
That's 2 storeys! The great thing is that the camera can be raised and lowered in seconds. We can also tilt the head remotely! The boom is currently being prepared to be fitted onto the track dolly allowing transit shots of varying heights. The combinations are endless! You may be surpised to know that this boom cost less than £30 to make! The Tripod has been borrowed but our estimations show that a base would cost another £10. If you have the enthusiasm it is that easy! Check out some pictures of the boom arm in testing in our doom raiders media archive

Moving on from testing equipment for the time being, we have now started storyboarding and planning fight scenes and sequences. As with the lightsaber scenes in 'The Empire Strikes Backyard', we have no previous experience in this sort of filming. You can see some pictures of our first attempt in our Doom Raiders Media Archive here. Soon we may be able to upload a short test fight scene in full!

Dolly on Location

Well things are still moving in Pre-production. In fact you could say moving on rails! We have now taken the track dolly to a location for testing - The Abandoned village! The terrain was quite rough with pot holes to be negotiated. See the pictures here. The dolly is still squeaking but we are confident that the problem will be sorted shortly. Next we hope to take the equipment to the jungle...

Someone has made an 'Empire Strikes Backyard' Fanfilm!
Well... it is a tribute to George Lucas as played by Darren Scales in our film. Produced by Seth Johnson of Tallahassee, Florida, USA, it is a montage of footage from our Making of Mockumentary. Well received on TFN, we all love it and consider it to be a great compliment from one of our fans. Seth has kindly agred for us to host the film for you to download from this site, and you can find it on our SW2 DOWNLOADS page. You can contact Seth at *deleted* or visit his website at http://jjason.com/seth

IMPORTANT! - Our latest production
The film is going to be a parody based on all those classic action adventure films like the Mummy, The Jewel in the Nile and of course, the Indiana Jones Trilogy!
Filming is set to begin in October and in the meantime, the immense task of pre-production is well underway. Several challenges face the BYP team. This feature is going to be filmed on location in the middle East and Africa, and we are hoping to have some amazing stunts and special effects! The title for the project is not confirmed as we a looking into copyright rules... Characters also haven't yet been finalised. Any ideas or contributions would be gratefully received...
We can be sure that we are going to need lots of extras of all ages to play village folk, soldiers and Arabs! We are also open to offers of help in post production - there will be a significant number of special effects shots that will need working on - If you have skills we might find useful, get in touch! For the latest info keep coming back to the website. We also hope to keep our mailing list members up to date with regular bulletins.

BYP Book '...is not about Star Wars' now available for download
During the latter part of 2000, we put together a book describing both the history of BYP and details of the making of our Star Wars film 'The Empire Strikes Backyard'. We find this a useful reference source for ourselves, and hope that it will provide a few tips to any other budding filmmakers out there! You can find the book here.

Get well soon Jordan!
We were all sorry to hear that Jordan - Phill's cat (named after the famous racing team) - has broken three of his toes. Unfortunately this means the poor little blighter will be wrapped up in bandages, hobbling about, and unable to go out for several weeks. We send him all our best wishes and hope he is back on form soon... maaaaaaaaooouuuse ! Send your get well messages to *Deleted*

BYP Opportunities... you can influence what we do next!
Darren and family are on the move. This may mean that not only will BYP have a chance to organise a team building group holiday this year, but we probably will be able to plan a filming project based around this. We are always keen for people to put forward ideas for projects, short films, documentaries, audio projects etc. etc., whether they are active members of the company or not, and would like to give you - the viewer, the opportunity to make suggestions. If you have a story, a script or screenplay, or simply an idea, let us know on *deleted*. We will do our best to discuss these on a regular basis and let you know what we think.

Slow Progress
Unfortunately, progress on our album has been slow. Some have proposed that this is because BYP works best as a team, and motivation can be difficult to find when people are working alone. Nevertheless, the project has not been abandoned. We have limited experience in music mixing, and this has also often made matters difficult. Still... remember guys - new year - new you - new BYP. Other plans are afoot that may make life more interesting...
